Master of Science in Finance
The Master of Science in Finance is a specialized master's degree designed for intensive study in finance, which requires strong analytic skills.

Careers
A Master of Science in Finance degree includes career opportunities in the following areas: entry-level analyst positions that support portfolio managers, commercial lending officers, investment bankers, and corporate treasurers. Advanced positions include portfolio managers, investment bankers, corporate treasurers, and chief financial officers

Learning Goals

The objectives of the program are to create sophisticated solutions to financial problems, design and evaluate new financial instruments, leverage resources for optimal profitability and productivity, develop strategic financial objectives, seize new business opportunities, mitigate corporate risk, successfully compete in global marketplace, improve investment decision making, and analyze technical financial material.

Curriculum The number of courses required to obtain the Master of Science in Finance is twelve.

Required Courses (9) include:

  • ECO 555 Economics for Decision Making
  • FIN 617 Quantitative Methods in Finance
  • FIN 555 Financial Management
  • FIN 523 Investment Analysis
  • FIN 524 Financial Statement Analysis
  • FIN 562 Derivatives and Risk Management
  • FIN 553 Special Topics in Corporate Finance

Elective courses:
Each candidate must take five elective courses. Of these five, two electives must be taken in Finance and three may be selected from Finance or from other advanced, non-finance courses from within the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business. Courses may be taken outside of the graduate school of business for credit in the program with the prior approval of the program director or department chair. These courses must be selected from among the courses approved for credit in a concentration or program offered by the college.

Undergraduate Preparation and Prerequisites
Students entering our master's programs are expected to have ethical understanding and reasoning abilities; analytic skills; proficiency with information technology; an understanding of diversity and multiculturalism; reflective thinking skills and communication abilities. These are general education requirements based on the accreditation standards of AACSB International - the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Many bachelors degree programs cover these topics.

Undergraduate course work in financial calculus, statistics, financial accounting, microeconomics, macroeconomics and basic computer skills is required. If these courses were not taken as an undergraduate, they will be added to the list of required courses.

The Master of Science in Finance is a degree option for undergraduates who majored in business, mathematics, economics and the natural sciences.

Admissions Requirements/Deadlines
A prospective student may apply to begin this program at the start of any quarter.

To be considered for admission, complete an application for admission; provide two letters of recommendation; resume, GMAT score report (no more than five years old); transcripts from universities attended indicating conferral of a bachelor's degree; work experience (not required); international students are required to submit a recent TOEFL score (not more than two years old).

The Kellstadt Graduate School of Business supports a self-managed application process. Prospective students are required to submit the completed application together with all supporting documentation and the $60 application fee. The GMAT score report is to be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service. The self-managed application process supports an efficient processing of applications and enables us to provide the applicant with a prompt and timely decision.

The Admissions Committee may request a phone or personal interview with an applicant to discuss the applicant's academic and professional goals.

Application Deadlines:
July 1st for the Autumn Quarter
October 1st for the Winter Quarter
February 1st for the Spring Quarter
April 1st for the Summer Quarter

International students and applicants educated outside the United States must submit their applications two months prior to the above deadlines.

Tuition / Financial Aid
Tuition for all courses in our master's programs is currently $2600 per course. Consult with our Financial Aid office to explore financial aid options. Internships are unavailable for this program. DePaul participates in a tuition reimbursement program. For more information, contact our Financial Accounts office.

Career Placement Services Science in Finance
Graduates of the Master of Science Finance program obtain positions with top accounting firms such as Refco, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Harris Bank and Aries Capital Management to name a few. Our Career Management Center will provide you with assistance in career consulting, career management seminars, networking events, and job posting.

Class Schedule/Location
The program is designed for the part-time student who works during the day. However, you can attend full-time by taking a full-load of courses in the evening. DePaul is on the quarter system (10 weeks) and most classes take place in the evening at our Loop campus in Chicago.

With an appropriate undergraduate education, it is possible to complete a specialized master's degree in three to four quarters of full-time evening study (where "full-time" is defined as four courses per academic quarter) or six to eight quarters of part-time evening study (where "part-time" is defined as two courses per academic quarter).
