Winners of the DePaul CFO Stock Contest
Tom Ogborn- Overall winner
I would recommend the contest for anyone in the financial field. It is a great opportunity to take what has been learned in the classroom and apply it to the market. You can effectively put your "money where your mouth is," at least in virtual dollars. The competition allows for taking the theories and equations off the page and pitting your strategy against other DePaul investors in a quantifiable manner.
Stewart Hendrix- Second place
The information interviews with both Barrington Research and William & Blair were more detailed than expected. Each firm allowed me to sit with key members, where discussions were not limited only to the stock contest, but were rather introductions to these institutions and their involvement in the financial services industry. This experience created one of the best opportunities I have found to network with local industry professionals, individuals I hope to keep in contact with throughout my career.
The DePaul CFO stock contest is something I would recommend for any current student or alumnus. Though I currently work for an asset management company, I am not a portfolio manager, although I have always wondered how well I might be able to do trading an equity portfolio. This contest created the perfect opportunity.
Going into the game I had expected there would be a feeling of competition against the others in the game, but what I realized it was more about my own experience running a portfolio than it was about trying tow in. This three month experience is something I wish I would have the chance to do years ago, as it has helped me feel more comfortable with looking at a stock and deciding when is a good time to buy, a good time to sell and even better a good time to sit on sidelines.
